As Governor, I would sign an executive order allowing Pennsylvania to recognize legally performed same-sex marriages from other states. I would support legislation legalizing same-sex marriage in the Commonwealth. That legislation would not force any church or synagogue to perform same-sex marriages nor prohibit any from welcoming gay couples into the marriage sacrament.
Earlier this week 75 influential Republicans signed onto a legal brief supporting the right of gay couples to marry. Legalizing same-sex marriage is the right thing to do. It also happens to boost the economy. In the first year after New York State legalized gay marriage, wedding license fees, wedding celebrations and other wedding-related purchases boosted the economy by $259 million in New York City alone.
By welcoming families headed by married same-sex partners, Pennsylvania would become a more attractive place to live and work.
